Intro

Today we remember the life of Nelson Cooper, 50, Papa Smurf. Papa Smurf earned the PAX “respect” but lost his life too soon. His family runs the CoopStrong organization and annual run in his honor. Last year, YHC designed a ruck to honor him. Today we complete the 2nd annual F3C Coop Strong ruck.

Warm-o-rama

With rucks and 40-lb sandbags in tow, mosey to MARS station for disclaimer and the reading of portions of Papa Smurf ‘s obituary. Reminder that death is coming for us. Memento Mori.

The Thang

Ruck on for all exercises, 4 rounds

  • 1/2 mile ruck with sandbag
  • 25 Mountain Climbers (Rubicon)
  • 20 Merkins
  • 15 Sandbag Power Cleans
  • 10 Thrusters
  • 5 Burpees

Next we repeated the agony hill next to the amphitheater twice before returning for the buyout.

20 manmakers with ruck or sandbag.

COT

Prayers for Hooch, Stopwatch, and Downward Dog’s friend PJ, whose wife ended her life. She was a nurse working COVID patients.

Naked Man Moleskin

Death is coming. I hate that. Sometimes it overwhelms me. For some of us it will come too soon, like with Papa Smurf. Others of us will be glad to go after living long, happy lives.

But like the kings of the gloom we are, we must remember this–memento mori.

And in life we must be CoopStrong. The F3 Lexicon defines it as Infectious strength of spirit and manifestation of Perseverance. Be Coop Strong in life so you’ll be remembered in death.

YHC loves the song Abracadavers by The Classic Crime. It’s no coincidence it came on as YHC drove home this morning.

“It’s like I never had time to look away.B

Bodies stuck between death and decay,

Are plastic and set up on display.
And their eyes are wide and they are looking my way.
Each ligament exposed, each muscle connected.
And every organ that I proudly neglected.
I’ve been arranged for the common collective.
Stomaching the sight of human flesh resurrected.
It seems we’re fearfully made and designed.
But it’s a shame we can be so blind.
We’re all the same,
Made of hair and bones and water and blood cells.
We’re all to blame,
For spending way too much time on ourselves.
I have been blessed and now I’m blind.
A veil’s been pulled over my eyes.
Now every bad season that kept me believing seems so contrived.
There’s more glory to be seen
And savored through suffering
Than ever was through self-serving escape.
It seems we’re fearfully made and designed.
But it’s a shame we can be so blind.
We’re all the same,
Made of hair and bones and water and blood cells.
We’re all to blame,
For spending way too much time on ourselves.
Ashes to ashes
And dust to dust!
‘Cause we’re all the same,
Made of hair and bones and water and blood cells.
We’re all to blame,
For spending way too much time on ourselves.”
Memento Mori.
