YHC saw an open spot on the Q sheet just two weeks after his last opportunity and jumped on it. He wanted to smooth out a few things from his previous Q.

There were seven, a more manageable number for an inexperienced Q. When the 0530 bell rang we ran down the hill, circled up in the grass for some “Gas Station Ready” drills, throwing some ‘bows and knees followed by sprawls (x10 ea). Then back up to the flag to pick up E-Tools Sticks of Pain. With only seven PAX we only needed one stick. We indian ran down the road to the gate and back to the flag (about a mile) while passing the stick back down the line for the last guy to run it up front again. Everyone had ample opportunity to rifle carry the Stick of Pain this time!

We then proceeded to the playground for The Thang.

The Q recycled his last Murph City Q. Just because you’ve already done something doesn’t mean you can never do it again, especially if it works well. YHC feels like the workout he designed fits very well with the goal of Murph City, namely to improve one’s ability to perform the Murph.

We started with Maaco Murpees (three squats, into two Merkins, and back up into one pullup) x5. Then we partnered up for inverted rows. While the man on the rings performs the rows, his partner holds his legs and squats along with his movement. Run to the base of the flag hill for 15 Merkins, and then take the flag hill for 20 squats.

At some point during this evolution the gazelles of the Flying V came buzzing through. Trill even stopped of to do a few pullups and Merkins with us.

Most teams either completed or were in the middle of their third cycle, with the exception of Brad Pitt and Tik Tok, who were on their seventh or eighth cycle when the Q called us back out into the grass to circle up for some Mary.

The Q asked the PAX to focus on ab work, and the PAX delivered. YHC doesn’t remember all of the exercises called, but they included flutter kicks, American hammers, LBC’s, J-Lo’s, and some weird thing called out by Tik Tok that YHC has never done before and doesn’t care to do again. Listening to Tik Tok grunt his out was pretty funny tho.

Then, it was back to the rings to dead hang for the last few minutes. Once the PAX had hung for as long as possible, they planked to rest their hands for a bit and then hit the rings again.

At this point Tik Tok said we should call this evolution “The Lord of the Rings” and thus a name for the evolution and for this backblast was conceived. Brad Pitt was today’s Lord of the Rings, as he stayed up on the rings for the entire time while the rest of the PAX had to alternate between planking and hanging. The Q misheard the time check, 0613 as opposed to 0615, so the PAX planked at the flag to run the time out.

In the CoT the Q told the PAX about Sonar Technician Second Class Matthew Axelson, who was killed in Operation Red Wing along with Lieutenant Michael Murphy, the Murph’s namesake. Here is the Navy Cross citation he received posthumously. The Navy Cross is the second highest medal awarded to Sailors in combat, behind the Medal of Honor.

“The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Sonar Technician Second Class Matthew Gene Axelson, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in actions against the enemy while serving in a four-man Special Reconnaissance element with SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team ONE, Naval Special Warfare Task Unit, Afghanistan from 27 to 28 June 2005. Petty Officer Axelson demonstrated extraordinary heroism in the face of grave danger in the vicinity of Asadabad, Konar Province, Afghanistan. Operating in the middle of an enemy-controlled area, in extremely rugged terrain, his Special Reconnaissance element was tasked with locating a high-level Anti-Coalition Militia leader, in support of a follow-on direct action mission to disrupt enemy activity. On 28 June 2005, the element was spotted by Anti-Coalition Militia sympathizers, who immediately revealed their position to the militia fighters. As a result, the element directly encountered the enemy. Demonstrating exceptional resolve and fully understanding the gravity of the situation, Petty Officer Axelson’s element bravely engaged the militia, who held both a numerical and positional advantage. The ensuing firefight resulted in numerous enemy personnel killed, with several of the Navy members suffering casualties. Ignoring his injuries and demonstrating exceptional composure, Petty Officer Axelson advised the teammate closest to him to escape while he provided cover fire. With total disregard for his own life and thinking only of his teammate’s survival, he continued to attack the enemy, eliminating additional militia fighters, until he was mortally wounded by enemy fire. A champion of freedom, Petty Officer Axelson will be remembered for his self-sacrificing actions in the continuing Global War on Terrorism. By his undaunted courage, fortitude under fire, and unwavering dedication to duty, Petty Officer Axelson reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for the cause of freedom.”

Site Q Waffle Cone was 6th man and told us about his history in F3. Prayers were requested for him, and his legal proceedings and relationships with his children. Also mentioned were One Scoop and his family, Sargeant Slaughter, Stopwatch and Hooch.

NMM

It’s always an honor to lead the HIM of F3 Cherokee, and doubly an honor to lead them at Murph City, where we also recognize fallen heroes who died to defend our freedom.

Brad Pitt, at 65, is more fit than YHC has ever been in his whole life.

Waffle Cone is a great encourager.

It was great to see Brady Bunch out in the gloom after his recent surgery.
