INTRO:
When considering the inaugural beatdown of The Happy Jack, a thought crossed my mind pertaining to a comment an old coach made to me once about field sports, and ever since it has been proven true time and again: short, short, long. Essentially, the key to any field sport with a ball (or recreational activity, for that matter) is short, short, long — a series of short, quick passes or moves, and then boom, a pass or break or blast deep for the score. So with that, this beatdown was born. Short, Short, Long . . . Happy Jack.
WARM-O-RAMA:
We began The Happy Jack at the pavilion near the football field, and moseyed to the open grass fields that host both soccer and lacrosse. This warm-up consisted of a few stretches and then some activities to get the heart going:
- 10 Weed Pickers
- 10 Hillbillies
- Line up on the side line, 30 Mtn Climbers, 15 Mercans, 10 Burpees, 100 yard Sprint across the field. Rinse and repeat.
THE THANG:
The Short-Short-Long
We headed to the nearest marker along the outer track/path encircling Veterans Park, on the far side of the park. The track consists of 5-6 marker posts (the PAX usually skips the two closest in proximity near the tennis courts) approximately .25 miles apart on this 1.3 mile loop. This particular happy Thang consisted of a sprint to the nearest post, 10 burpees, a sprint back, 20 reverse LBC, and then a long accelerating run beyond the first marker to the next whereupon each PAX completes 30 mercans. Each sprint up and back was approximately 0.5 miles as was then the sprint forward to the next post beyond. The effort indeed took the wind out of your sail, especially the hills along the track.
Again, the objective at any Happy Jack is to complete a full 5K during the beatdown. The PAX completed a full loop around the track, and so in doing the math, the 3.1 miles was accomplished.
Mosey back to the flag for the big finish:
- 20 Happy Jacks
